feeling a slight breeze in the air as he opened the doors to leave and heard them lock behind him, he whipped out his phone. aimlessly, he began his trek back to the university where he stayed. he could have chosen to live off campus, but it was cheaper to be there and much easier to get to classes. the dorms were a short walk away from all of the buildings. the restaurant, however, was not. his iPhone illuminated in his hands and he began walking. aj didn't care if he accidentally bumped into anyone. he knew the path back home like the back of his hand, so he hardly needed to look at the street signs. andrew knew that fauna had left work before him, but never checked to see if she was ahead of his pace.
as soon as he heard the sound of footsteps picking up speed, he looked up from his Facebook page on his phone and saw fauna nearly jogging to her destination. he immediately stopped and cocked an eyebrow up. "uh, faun." he projected, making sure she could hear him. it was kind of funny. she must have thought he was some creeper following her and started running away. "there is no need to run." he laughed slightly, still standing. he placed his phone in his back pocket and kept his hand there. his other hand followed, giving him a casual stance as he looked at her. god, she was gorgeous. stunning red hair, beautiful eyes, and a perfect smile. he simply smiled and waited for her to come to him.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-image:url(http://i54.tinypic.com/2vafwqd.jpg), border: solid #ffffff 5px; width: 400px; height: 500px;] Fauna's paranoia was at an all time high, and she was wondering why she wasn't even having some sort of panic attack. She thought she was being followed, and this person was going to attack her or something. She kept up her light jog, hoping that she could just shake him away from her and maybe he would prey on someone else. She would never actually want someone to be attacked. But if it was between her and someone else, she'd let it happen to someone else. Her thoughts ran all over the place, each thought changing each time her foot hit the ground to run away from this thought to be attacker. She needed somewhere safe. She couldn't just jog all the way home and hope that he would just stop and go away. What if she was being stalked? What if he knows where she lived? She had to go somewhere else. It was the only way. She thought of all the places she could go, and there weren't many. She could go into a gas station, she could stop by a bakery or something. Though what bakery was open late at night. She kept thinking like this until she heard a voice behind her.
She whipped her head around when she heard his voice. AJ Greene. Oh how she was happy to see him. She was always happy to see him. They worked together at the restaurant, and he gave her butterflies like none other. She had a really big crush on him. She would spill about him all the time back home, and her room mate would always tease her about how in love she was with him. She didn't really know him, they weren't dating, so she knew she couldn't be in love. But still, it was a very large attraction to him, and she thought he was really sweet and kind. And even though he didn't really know much about her past, she let him in on simple things. Her favorites, what she does, what she likes to do, et cetera. So it was a good personality booster that she gave herself. And maybe someday she could let him in, but she didn't think it'd be anytime soon. Unfortunately, her past was not something she shared every day, and it was something that she wished she never even had to keep secret. But if people knew what had happened to her, they would give her pity, and that was not something she liked. She wanted people to get to know her and just be there for her because they cared, not because she has a hard life and she is very low class in this place. It wasn't her choice, and she wasn't going to let it rule her.
"AJ Greene!" she said, her voice on the verge of mad but mostly playful, "You scared me half to death!" She walked back over to him, letting her hips swing the way they normally did. Her charm automatically turned on when she talked to him. Her girly girl side kicked it up a notch. She had a giggle, her hips swung, she tried to be flirty and sexy all at the same time. And she tried to be that cute girl that he would ask out. He hadn't asked her out yet though, and although it annoyed Fauna, she didn't know if he actually liked her, which put a damper on things. When she approached him, she stopped and she ran a hand through her bright red hair. Her hair changed color a lot, mostly between blonde and red, but she liked her natural a lot more than the blonde, so she went back to it. She rested one hand on her hip, and her other hand rested atop of that one. She gave him a small smile and giggle. "I thought you were some crazy person that was going to come and rape me," she said honestly, "That's why I was jogging." She was never that truthful with anyone. She knew she really liked him. Now all she needed was to know if he liked her.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-image:url(http://i54.tinypic.com/2vafwqd.jpg), border: solid #ffffff 5px; width: 400px; height: 500px;] he conjured up a large grin as soon as fauna whipped her head around. she seemed happy enough to see him, even thought he could sense a slight panic in her presence. fauna was absolutely too great for words. andrew's only problem was actually expressing his feelings toward her. sure, they had fun and always hung out together at work, but he never made a single move towards her. that might be a turn off for some girls. a guy who won't go out to get what he wants isn't exactly the ideal thing, but aj preferred to take his time with the gals he really liked. okay, so he flirted with a ton of girls when he was drunk, but being sober was a totally different experience. aj didn't want to be a huge douche and give on the impression that every girl was absolutely going to be with him. he also didn't want to be a massive wimp and stay away from showing how he felt at all. he flirted, sure, but it was subtle. a little touch to the shoulder here, a small compliment there. nothing too over the top. he was low-key with every aspect of his life.
he laughed when she responded to him. "sorry, faun!" he grinned, brushing a hand through his curly locks. he lightly ruffled out the ends as he saw the girl approach him. andrew observed her change from the frantic person who was jogging earlier to a confident girl in just a few small steps and a couple swished of the hips. he desperately hoped this wasn't an act because he sort of enjoyed the playful, flirty side of fauna madley. she confessed that she thought he was a crazy person coming after her. well, that explained the jogging. it was understandable for a girl like her to be scared of people lurking around in the night. being a guy, he couldn't exactly sympathize with the fear, but he had a general knowledge of it.
andrew laughed a little bit, thinking of a good plan to keep hanging out with fauna in this moment, but appearing to be somewhat of a knight in shining armor. "well, i'll just have to walk you home then." he suggested, the dimples in his cheeks imprinting the sides of his face. he had sort of a baby face, but no one seemed to mind. the dimples gave him character. "can't have you running around the streets of miami like a crazy person, now can we?" he gave a slight chuckle under his breath. he really hoped that she would go with him. not only did he want to keep her safe, he prayed that their conversation opened up enough for him to actually ask her on a date. it was going to take a lot, but aj would start mustering every ounce of confidence he had now. maybe by the end of the night, andrew would actually do something about his huge crush.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-image:url(http://i54.tinypic.com/2vafwqd.jpg), border: solid #ffffff 5px; width: 400px; height: 500px;] Fauna's heart raced as he told her that he would walk her home. She would love that. She would more than love that. Her head was screaming for him to just stay the night... They could watch movies and talk all night and cuddle and... She cut herself off before she could get her hopes up. She didn't think that AJ actually liked her like that. He was just being a good Samaritan to someone who was being paranoid on the streets at night. Why should she think that he would actually want to have a relationship with her? All her relationships ended poorly anyway, so it wasn't like this one, if it did go anywhere, was going to be any different. She started to play with a strand of her hair, flipping it and twirling it in all different ways. It was a nervous habit she had. Most people bit their nails, but she was different. She twirled her hair, picked at her bottom lip, bit at the back of her nails, where the skin was. It was just something she did, she didn't know why. And she wished she could stop sometimes, but other times, it made her feel really unique.
"Well that'd be very kind of you to walk me home," she said, trying to sound nonchalant about it. It would've worked if her voice didn't get a little shaky on the next sentence, "I would love you to walk me home." Of course she was nervous. If he did like her, maybe something could come out of their walk together. She didn't know though, and that drove her mad. Her heart pounded as she thought about it, what could happen on the walk back to her apartment. She shuffled her feet in a way that made even her a bit uneasy, and she then looked into his eyes. He stood a little bit taller than her, his curly hair giving him personality before you even got to know him, and his eyes telling you everything about him. He was sweet and kind and gentle, and his eyes showed that.
She started to walk away from him, heading back to her house, and she hoped that he would catch up to her. Her mind raced with possible scenarios that worked in her favor and scenarios that ended with her in ruins and her room mate and herself eating Chinese food late at night. So, to take her mind off of what was happening, she started a small conversation, or tried at least. "So, you go to the University right? What are you studying?" she asked. She didn't remember if this had come up in conversation before or not. Fauna wasn't one for the best memory of the bunch. So she asked questions a lot, and people sometimes got really upset with her. She didn't like people getting upset with her, but if she had to ask questions to keep her memory in order, than so be it. She was going to ask them dammit. She looked at him, her face blushing, as she waited for an answer from the curly haired boy.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-image:url(http://i54.tinypic.com/2vafwqd.jpg), border: solid #ffffff 5px; width: 400px; height: 500px;] aj could not have been more pleased when fauna accepted his offer to walk her home. he had actually never been to her place before, so it would be fun navigating the streets and heading to a different part of miami than he was used to. he mostly remained among the apartments near campus and the houses of random up and coming celebrities that decided to throw huge parties every now and then. he was clueless as to where she had resided, but aj knew that she had a roommate to keep the rent lower. it was understandable. a girl living off of the pay from two jobs. it was probably tough. andrew had some money from his mother because she was a bit higher up in her field of work and there had been some money left for him in the will of his almost-father. he couldn't exactly call the man his step-dad because he never knew his father to begin with.
the nerves in fauna's voice showed through in the slightest, but he picked up on them. aj just assumed he was still a little bit fearful from him scaring her half to death. yeah, they were friends, but aj didn't think that she really looked to him as anything else. he was going to have to take his chances though. if andrew even wanted a shot with her, he was going to have to brave rejection. yeah, he'd been shot down by girls in his lifetime, but having fauna push him away would be a devastating blow. they were around each other far too much. "you lead the way." aj smiled, looking ever so slightly down at her. "i have no idea where your place is." he chuckled at his own stupidity. the two began walking along side each other.
the sounds of the night filled the air and covered up any possible awkward silence between them. andrew was nervous. he had to keep his hands in his front pockets to keep her from seeing them shaking. aj didn't know if he could do it. he didn't know if he could just ask her out. his thoughts were interrupted by the sound of her voice. he felt the corners of his mouth turn up. fauna had an effect on aj that he loved. he could just be happy around her. it was the air about her that calmed his nerves. "uh, yeah." he began, remembering that he had probably told her what he did before. it didn't matter. he loved being asked questions in general. "i study psychology. i have no idea why, but i want to be a therapist." he shrugged. he figured he wanted to make the world happy and that's why he chose to talk to people as a profession, but he couldn't be too sure. he looked at the red head, whose eyes also rested on him. he felt his stomach churn in a nervous fashion and he looked toward the ground, smiling at their eye contact. "not sure how that's gonna pan out." he was so unsure about his future. he didn't want to grown up at all.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-image:url(http://i54.tinypic.com/2vafwqd.jpg), border: solid #ffffff 5px; width: 400px; height: 500px;] fauna's eyes were mostly pointed toward the ground. she was so flustered right now. the way he walked, talked, even breathed maybe just in fauna's head made her head tipsy. she really liked him, but just looking at him made her think that he was not the type who would go for a lower class girl with two jobs and a guy living in her apartment. in actuality, she was living in his. he was her support, her lifeline. and without him, this whole mess would've been something of a disaster for her. her parents and her fought quite a lot. and he was the guy that told her that she should head down to miami. her parents didn't like that idea, so she begged her grandparents to buy her a ticket down. they agreed, knowing what she had gone through growing. knowing that her parents weren't exactly suitable parents at all. they mentally abused her on countless occasions and even sometimes they physically abused her. she had the scars to prove it. they were still her parents though, and she loved them to death. but she couldn't live with them, couldn't even keep contact with them. she just had to be on her own.
"a therapist?" she said. after he said it, she did remember him telling her. but it was conversation she wanted. and she was going to continue it. it was ironic that she felt like she needed one, since her life was in ruins. and there he was, just right there. she knew that she would never really be able to tell him much about her past. she wanted to keep it behind her, keep all the hurt and guilt there. her room mate never brought it up either, since he knew how much it hurt her to think about what her parents had done to her. so she just kept it all bottled up inside, hoping that no one would ever try to bring the monster out that lived inside of her. "that suits you aj," she said, "you are a very good listener." she looked at him and smiled. couldn't help it. his smile was just so bright, so cute. the dimples in his cheeks always brought her in. there was some sort of spell that he had over her, since she really had never been this little girl like in so many years, and no one really has ever casted this kind of spell over her before. she didn't know if she was ready for it if they ever did date, which she felt was really unlikely.
she was at a lose for words, though they silence was something that she didn't mind. they sat comfortably in silence together, just ready to be around each other. but the urge to break the silence was something that she really would've liked to have complete. she kept thinking of things to say, but all of them sounded really stupid. she grabbed her phone and looked at it. a text from her room mate showed up. be quiet when you walk in. was all it said. she rolled her eyes. like she didn't know that already. he went to bed early on all the nights that she was out late because of work. and by early, she meant like ten. which she would love to do as well, but she couldn't because of these jobs that she had. she was always out late because of her waitressing, and when she was lifeguarding, he was there. always. she couldn't help it. she just needed, for once, him not to be mad at her for working so late. and she couldn't take another, you're working too hard talk. because if she couldn't lift her weight for the apartment, then she would move out. she needed the money, and she'd do anything for it.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-image:url(http://i54.tinypic.com/2vafwqd.jpg), border: solid #ffffff 5px; width: 400px; height: 500px;] in general, aj liked everyone, but there was something about fauna that was different. he liked her in a completely different way that he did his guy friends and especially his other girl friends. he actually felt nervous around fauna, like he never knew what to say. for a couple times in his life, he was actually rendered speechless by her. even though it was rare, it still happened. aj didn't care that she wasn't made of money and had to keep two jobs to hold everything together. aj didn't mind that she had a male roommate. he knew from one or two talks that he was just a friend back home, so it wasn't like he really had anything to worry about. if fauna and her roommate had a romantic connection, they probably would have dated by now, right? still, andrew considered the possibilities. every possible rejection scenario played through his head as the continued their walk. what if she liked someone else? what if she only thought of him as a friend? there were too many possibilities to grab a hold of, so he brushed them all off. he released them from his head and just lived in the moment, like he usually did.
aj smiled and nodded his head to confirm to her that he was actually going to be a therapist in the future. his smile continued to be slightly directed at the ground, scared that he would panic if he looked her in the eye. he wasn't all too sure about the therapist idea, but it sounded good in his head. like fauna mentioned, he was good at listening to people. aj would do any stupid thing to see a downtrodden friend smile. he would do anything for anyone and everyone knew that. that's why he was taken advantage of. he never titled it that though. he always saw his constant favors as helping someone else out. "i guess i am." he shrugged. "i just don't know if i'll be able to actually help someone." he expressed his own fear with ease. aj was a pretty open book. what you saw was actually who he was and what he told you was the absolute truth. he was just a carefree, loyal guy who never wanted to grow up or see anyone sad. "i guess that's what i have to learn in these next two years." he couldn't even believe that he had only two more years left of college. aj always debated on going to get his masters or doctorate, but the thought always left him in a haze.
the silence that followed after his response was comfortable. he didn't mind not talking, just as long as he was actually with fauna. he saw a quick flicker of a phone screen coming from the palm of her hand. aj lifted his head up, hoping she was fully aware that he was not looking at her message. andrew hated when others did that to him. even though he rarely had anything private to say, it was a little rude to look over someone else's shoulder. "so, what do you think you're gonna do in the future?" their conversation was a little bit serious, but aj was curious. "are you gonna stay here in miami or…" his voice trailed off in a questioning tone, hoping she would answer him. maybe she would be around for the next two years he would be here. or maybe she would head back home, wherever her home was. aj was surprised that he didn't actually know a whole lot about fauna oliva madley pre-miami. he craved information. he desperately wanted to know everything about her.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-image:url(http://i54.tinypic.com/2vafwqd.jpg), border: solid #ffffff 5px; width: 400px; height: 500px;] what was she going to do in the future? that was the big question wasn't it. she was probably going to stay in her current condition, except her room mate would probably move on, even if they had been best friends forever. she always felt like everyone would leave her in the end, since her parents did. of course, she completely controlled that one. but her anxiety always got the better of her in these kinds of situations. she kept thinking about her future. she would love to go to college, to become a teacher... but it wouldn't really work out. she assumed she could get the money from her grand-parents, but if they... she couldn't even bear to say the words in her head... she wouldn't be able to finish school. and then she'd be right back where she started. in her head, just staying this way was easier for her than tapping into her grand parents wealth. she hated taking money from people, especially them. they always wanted to give her some, but she didn't want any of it. she was fine on her own.
"i don't know actually," she said, "i can't afford to move anywhere else. so miami is where i'll probably stay. i just wish i could go to school like you though." in the serious air she let out a slight chuckle. there was nothing to laugh at, she knew it, but she didn't want him to feel sorry for her. she didn't want him to say sorry or feel bad for her. she was doing this to herself. she knew it. she wanted to be self-sufficient, but without the proper schooling, there was nothing she could do. she could barely afford rent, never mind a $1,000 or more bill at a school. a part of her wished she could've been younger longer. although her childhood really was messed up, it was still better than living in reality with money and problems and bills. she made decent money with two jobs, but after all the bills were paid off, she was stuck with maybe a hundred dollars left. and that went to food and cleaning and everything else. life was so difficult, and being a kid was so much easier. she really did take advantage of how it was, wanting to grow up too soon. everything was strange.
"if i were to go to school, i'd be a teacher," she said without him even asking about what she would want to do, "and i'd teach elementary schoolers. an english teacher." she was probably going to be just rambling on. even though she was shy, when it came to subjects she enjoyed, she could talk for hours. only to specific people though. and aj was definitely someone specific she loved to talk to. "i love poetry, and reading. i was harassed by my last... boyfriend? about it. he would call me up, drunk and ask if he had interrupted a late night reading session. which he always did. he didn't understand. i haven't found someone who has in a long time." she stopped herself before she could ramble on about her last relationships and hook ups. mason wasn't really a relationship. he was a hook up, someone looking for a good time. she fell too far in though, as always. and he used her more than once. she mentally clawed at her head, mad at herself, again, for making that dumb mistake. she looked at aj, her smile turning down just at the bottom of her lips. so anyone could see that the smile was genuine, like she wanted it to be. but you could tell she wasn't happy inside.

"oh, college isn't all it's cracked up to be." he let out a slight chuckle. actually, aj remembered being so excited to get out of phoenix and head to miami, but as soon as he got to school, he desperately wanted to see his mom and her fiance again. family was very important to him. it's not that he wasn't content with all the friend he had made, he loved each and every one of them, he just worried about his mom. especially after the man he could almost call a father died a few months ago. "if i could stay here, i probably would." aj admitted, knowing his love for the beach would probably keep him here. "but i'll probably end up back in phoenix at some point."
the boy could feel his grin widen as the girl talked about being a teacher. it seemed like something she was genuinely passionate about. aj believed that if something was your dream, you should follow it, no matter the obstacle. eventually, the outcome would be better than all the things you had to sacrifice along the way. "then you should do that! aj exclaimed, stopping for a second to toss his arms in front of him before walking again. "i'm sure you could get a scholarship, you're smart! there's always student loans. or you could get money from your parents." aj listed off the ways that fauna could possibly get to do what she wanted to do. "i know my mom's funding most of school." he laughed slightly. his mom didn't have much to give, but it was enough to keep him in school with his added savings and loans.
he was taken back by her statement about some guy not liking the things that she loved. aj would never judge or harass someone about their hobbies. especially if the person meant anything to him. it hurt aj to see that whoever was with fauna last didn't treat her the way that she should have been treated. this girl should be put on a pedestal. maybe not up too high to seem annoying or clingy, but just enough to know that she was the most important thing to a man. she was certainly the most important thing to aj in this moment. "well, that guy's an asshole." aj admitted. rarely did the boy ever insult anyone, but aj figured the guy deserved it. "while, i'm not one for reading myself, i think it's an awesome thing to love." aj could barely read the chapters in his psych books. he would always end up giving up after a paragraph and popping in a movie instead. "how dare anyone ruin a late night reading sesh!" he joked, but not in a mean manner. it was a fun, light hearted statement. he just wanted to see fauna smile. his eyes were still fixed on her, pearly whites shone in her direction.

and he mentioned her parents and her face dropped, just slightly. "i would love to go to school," she said, completely avoiding the subject of her mother, "but i can barely hold down an apartment now. if i get out of school and don't have an income... what would happen to me?" she didn't know the answer to her own question. what if she went out on the streets and had collectors after her just because she couldn't pay off loans to college? she couldn't have that. she had her whole life ahead of her, and jail was not something she was very much interested in pursuing at the age of twenty-one. she couldn't even imagine it, how she would be. her parents giving her big i told you so's. her grandparents feeling sorry for her, but being too old to actually do anything about it. they would love to save her, but she wouldn't be able to accept them helping her. she's been independent for longer than she can remember, and if anything ever happened to her... she didn't want to think about it. it would just end badly for her.
"i haven't dated the most star-shining, knight in pretty armor, guys," she said, a smile coming back on her lips. "let's just say, it seems like i'm not the type of girl that attracts good guys." between abuses and just down right harassment, fauna had a really bad habit of attracting guys that just were downright mean. it wasn't like she meant to, for some reason the guys that she liked were utterly... disgusting? mean? whatever it was. she always fought with them, and told them that she hated them, and would run back to scott, and then they would call asking if she wanted to talk and she'd run back. and then when they broke up for real, she would run to scott, he would pick up the pieces, and she would move on to the next asshole. and the whole time, once again, scott would be telling her how much of an idiot she was for staying with them that long in the first place. "i mean, it's not too bad. i'm just a cuddly person. i really like people who like to cuddle too... so whoever is in line, i jump on. not literally..." she let her mouth run again. was she ever going to learn her lesson?

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-image:url(http://i54.tinypic.com/2vafwqd.jpg), border: solid #ffffff 5px; width: 400px; height: 500px;] fauna had a point. school did cost a lot. and if the girl actually managed to hold up school and an apartment, loans would be ridiculous and only keep getting more burdensome as she got out. he managed to nod and bite his lip, not too sure of what to say. what was he supposed to do when the girl couldn't follow something she was truly passionate about? if aj had tons of money to burn, he would have happily handed over something to help her do what she wanted. he cared so much about her. it was kind of insane. aj never got so attached to girls before. she was different though. andrew was so drawn to her and not just because of her firry red hair and unique features. she had a gorgeous personality that balanced well with his own. "you do have a point." he muttered, not sure of what to say still. "teachers don't exactly have the most money in the bank." he could recall jokes about people being on a teacher's salary. "though, they are off during the summer." he put a single finger up, keeping count of the benefits.
he smiled when she spoke of her not-so great history with men. it wasn't a joke or anything, but the way she seemed to lighten the situation up made his lips curl upward. aj didn't know the guys she used to be with, nor did he care to know. that was then and this is now. "you know, i find that hard to believe." he admitted, feeling the nerves come up from his stomach. the butterflies continued to dance around in his chest. how could fauna not attract every type of guy. maybe he was biased though. "i'm positive that there's a good guy out there that likes you." like me he kept repeating in his mind, never actually saying it. he danced around his admission to liking her, giving her more vague comments. "he's probably just too scared to admit it." he could have kicked himself for not actually just saying that he like her. that would have been easier. better to just rip the band-aid right of, right? but no. he was an idiot.
he laughed when she began to ramble. it distracted him from his own mistake a few seconds ago. no one was perfect. aj found it a relief to see those little moments when people let their imperfections show. it kept him from being so uptight about pleasing every single person in the world. he felt the need to be perfect to each and every person. that was a burden he put upon his own shoulders that he would need to peel off at some point. "cuddling is the shit." he said with a smile. he was an affectionate guy in private. even when aj had a girlfriend, he wasn't much for public displays of affection. yeah, he liked to treat a girl like a princess, but kisses were meant for behind closed doors. or when he was absolutely shitfaced. "cuddling and movies is quite possibly the best combo ever."

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-image:url(http://i54.tinypic.com/2vafwqd.jpg), border: solid #ffffff 5px; width: 400px; height: 500px;] after aj finished talking, she rolled her eyes slightly. she didn't believe that she attracted good guys. all of the guys she had dated were scum to her and she hated even thinking about most of them. she wished she could find someone who was sweet and kind, who would love her for who she was and just be there for her whenever she needed him to be. but it was just, not happening in fauna's lifetime. she let her mouth run again. "i've dated so many douchebags though. i'd be surprised if a nice guy liked me. i mean, i've always been friends with them, but they never become something more. it's like this wall is up for nice guys, and there's a door, but there is a sign that says douches only," she said. she had no idea where that imagery came from in her head, but it was a really good representation of how she felt her love life was. if it didn't say that, it was something like, only abusive partners or this girl is waiting to get hurt. anything else but, this girl needs a guy to love her and care for her. so please, only nice guys. she wished that this 'door' she had made in her head, had a sign to flip so that the nice guys could come in. like the open and close signs you see on doors of stores that don't have fancy open signs that light up.
"if you could find a nice guy who wanted to date me, i'd be really shocked. i'd probably give you the biggest hug in the world," she said. though she probably wouldn't date any guy that aj suggested. she liked him. borderline loved him. she wanted to be with him every second she could, just talking and laughing and watching movies. she wanted him to be the guy that held her while she cried and smoothed her hair out and kissed the top of her head softly. her life would be so much simpler. she wanted a guy who bought her things even though she told him a thousand times that she didn't want him to buy her things. or even just thought about buying her things. a guy who bought her jewelry just because and someone that bought her stuffed animals when she was sick. she didn't want all this because she was materialistic, but the thought mattered to her. and knowing that he was thinking about her made her butterflies light up. she knew that aj would be that kind of guy, and she wanted to be with him so bad.
she continued to navigate her way through the streets as she waited for the boy to reply to her. her head was facing the ground, self conscience with what she just said. she never opened up that much, even though it was aj. she felt like he could really open her up if he tried. she hoped he would at least. she ran her fingers through her hair again, the nerves kicking in as she realized what she said. what if he just thought she was crazy? what if, after this night, he never wanted to see her again? she would be extremely hurt. she couldn't have that, but if it was what he wanted she would do it. she felt her fingers clench and the anticipation of his reply was killing her. what if he just walked away because of how crazy she was. what if... she pushed all those thoughts out of her head, she didn't want to have an anxiety attack in front of him. so she just let yourself breathe in the night air, which was always cooler than the warm air that miami brought. and she hoped that maybe he would have an answer for her that wouldn't make her cry when she got home.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-image:url(http://i54.tinypic.com/2vafwqd.jpg), border: solid #ffffff 5px; width: 400px; height: 500px;] aj could clearly see the visual that fauna was trying to put out. it seemed absurd hearing it out loud, but it made perfect sense to him. fauna wasn't crazy, she was just trying to lighten up a difficult part of her life. aj knew a lot of girls who always fell for the bad boy, only to end up getting hurt in the end. hell, one of his best friends was sort of the trademark 'bad boy', but aj knew that he was good at the core. the guys fauna seemed to know and describe were probably scumbags through and through. he didn't understand why anyone would treat a girl as awesome as her so poorly. he didn't know the full extent of her relationships, so he wasn't going to be one to judge, but he didn't like what they made her think of herself. a nice guy was going to have to come in and show fauna how truly amazing she is. a nice guy like aj. if only he could muster the courage.
for a split second, he actually started to run through his male friend's names in his head, but then shook them off. aj wanted fauna. he didn't want any of his friends to have her. he was going to have to get selfish for once in his life. aj was going to have to grab the bull by the horns and run with it. picking up tiny drops of courage, he finally spoke up. "i think i might know a guy." he said, smiling at the ground, too nervous to look at her. he wasn't being smug. he was being honest. aj knew that he liked her, but he couldn't express it directly. he seemed to have to approach everything in a joking manner. at least until he was brave enough to just say something outright. when it came to love, aj danced around the subject, never touching it because he didn't think anyone actually loved him. most girls just friend-zoned him and asked him to hook them up wit ha buddy of his. he was always happy to oblige, but it left him lonely.
"and i think you know him too." he kept his gaze down at the street, still following her lead. the grin he made was small, but evident. he desperately hoped that she would say something so that he could go in to actually ask her out. what was the worst that would happen? he would be rejected? it's not like that hadn't happened in his life before. he could handle it. aj was able to move on with the world as if nothing had happened. something about this night felt right though. like the stars were all in line and poised to help him out. he just had a gut feeling that there was some semblance of a chance that this might actually work out. he hoped it would. he really hoped it would.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-image:url(http://i54.tinypic.com/2vafwqd.jpg), border: solid #ffffff 5px; width: 400px; height: 500px;] fauna felt the butterflies knot up in her stomach. he knew someone who liked her? she didn't know if he was being serious or not. if he was just saying this to make her feel better. "yeah right aj," she said, assuming that he was just saying it to make her feel better. she didn't let herself fall out of step with him, even though she was still a little shocked that he even said that he knew someone. she didn't want herself to believe it, since she didn't think she was good enough for someone who thought she was. and she wouldn't date anyone that he said, unless he managed to reject her. of course, if she ever got up the courage to tell him that she liked him. she doubted it. fauna wasn't one to tell people how she felt. pretty much ever. she'd rather have her feelings bottled up then deal with the heat of rejection. even if she wouldn't like anyone else until she found out how someone felt about her, she would keep it bottled up inside for a long long time.
"you're kidding right?" she said, "because honestly, if you're serious, and then it turns out this person doesn't like me, i will be really upset. and if i know him, why hasn't he just told me yet? though, i can understand not telling someone, since i'm too shy to tell the person i like. but really? and oh my god. i'm so sorry, i talk so much but. i just can't shut up with you. it's like you draw everything out of my mouth. or maybe it's just nerves, but i don't have a reason to be nervous..." she said, her face blushing. she was just shooting herself in the foot now, and she didn't like it one bit. "i'm sorry, i'll shut up now and let you talk." she looked at him, just waiting for him to say something to make her insistent rambling come to a halt. it was hard, since it happened so often, but she tried really really hard to stop it before she got too embarrassed. and it was easy to tell when she was embarrassed by how bright red her cheeks got. almost the same color as her hair. she hated that lie detector everyone called blushing, but it was something she dealt with, along with those pesky ramblings.
it took fauna all of her willpower to not start talking again. there were so many things she wanted to tell him, so many things she held inside. it was hard for her. there was just too much that she couldn't say. too much that she kept locked inside for no one to see. and it was a problem for her, she knew that. she knew that she had issues with trusting people, especially the people she was closest to. she wanted to toss away all her feelings and listen to everything they had to say, because they were more important than her in her mind and she would do anything to make them happy. even degrade herself, demean herself, or give herself a bad reputation. many of her exes told her she was too poor, and told her she should become a stripper. but as soon as she told scott about it, he told her that she was crazy. that she could never do that. even though her exes knew she had a great body one that she hated with every fiber of her being, and knew she had so little confidence, they still told her that. she looked at aj, hoping that he could drag her out of so many bad thoughts and feelings. make her feel better again.
