the ice cream shop provided the perfect place for him to run into. aj felt the air conditioning hug his skin as soon as he stepped through the doors. some of the heat from the sun remained in his clothes, but the cool air felt great on his face. the sweet smell of the dessert filled his lungs and enticed him towards the glass case that held the ice cream. there were tubs filled with vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry. as well as different flavors that were no doubt imagined by the store he was in. cotton candy sounded interesting. and s'mores flavor seemed to be perfect for his food mood right now. a girl behind the counter approached him and asked if he would like to order anything. "uh no thanks." he smiled at her. "just give me a few minutes." his dimples pressed into his cheeks when he spoke to the person who worked in the shop. she simply nodded and walked away.
aj crossed his arms and examined the colorful display of ice cream. there were too many options. to be honest, he was overwhelmed. all he wanted was one small treat to soothe himself from the heat outside. he knitted his brow as he kept searching for the perfect flavor. his thoughts were brought back to phoenix. his mom always had new exciting flavors of ice cream in his fridge. granted, she was a young mother and could still enjoy treats with her son. he could remember when he was a child, sitting cross legged in a chair when he was five, enjoying a bowl of ice cream with his mom. she was probably, what, only twenty-two at that point? age didn't matter though. she had raised aj right. and she always had help from her friends. he was worried about her. she was at home, dealing with a huge loss in her life all by herself. aj almost had a man to call his father, for once. but he died unexpectedly of a heart attack three months ago. aj had yet to go home since then. he bit his lip, bringing him back to reality and back to the search for what flavor he wanted.

keep the fire alive and stay young at heart [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, width: 425px; height: 325px; background-image:url(http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_liediyjHg21qcdtsho1_400.jpg), border: solid #C2CBC8 5px;] Ah, Miami! When Krystal stepped off the plane earlier that day, she was nothing but an excited ball of energy. Despite the heat, the girl couldn’t sit still from the moment her eyes landed on the Atlantic ocean. She bounced happily through the landing process, squirmed impatiently as people started gathering their items to exit the plane and she gabbed happily with her cab driver as he took her to her hotel. He seemed amused by her energy and excitement and gave her the low down on a few places that she might want to check out since she wasn’t intending on surprising her best friend with her presence till tomorrow.
Once she was out of the cab and had paid, Krys made her way up to her hotel room, lugging her overfilled bags onto the baggage cart and toting them to her room. Again, she must have been amusing people left and right because one of the clerks called a bellboy to help her get her stuff loaded. She filled him in excitedly about the details of her trip. He laughed and wished her luck once they got to her room and he’d helped her unload her luggage. ”I have got to stop packing so much.” Krys mused to herself. She took a moment to take in the city from her room on the fifteenth floor before she abandoned it for a view of the shower.
About an hour later, Krystal was all washed up and clean of all the airport filth that clung to her skin. Now, instead of smelling like musty old airplane, she smelt like her Pomegranate-Mango soap and her peach shampoo and conditioner and Lord knows she felt a million times cleaner. Sliding on her shoes, she went back downstairs and went to talk to the lady behind the desk about good places to eat. Once she had directions to a diner down they way, Krystal declined the cab and took off on foot, eager to see more of this city.
But as she walked down the walkway, she looked around in the shops, coming up on an ice cream parlor and making a mental note to stop by there after lunch. As she was walking by, a familiar stature and set of curls caught her eyes. Krystal wouldn’t recognize that set of curls in a police line-up blind. Though she hadn’t planned on seeing him till the next day, she turned and let herself into the welcoming cool air of the shop, heading right behind him and covering his eyes from behind. She didn’t say ‘guess who’ like she should have because that was a dead giveaway. So instead, she bit her tongue in a grin to stay quiet and waiting for him to either turn around or figure out who she was.

"holy shit! kris!" he exclaimed, throwing his arms around his best friend. he was probably suffocating her with the amount of force that he used, but he didn't care at this point. he had missed her so much and the fact that she was in miami right now was a complete surprise. a pleasant one though. aj couldn't remember the last time he saw her face-to-face. it probably hadn't been since winter break that he went back to phoenix. now it was summer time and though they texted all the time, he still wanted to be able to just hold his friend like this. "i can't believe you're here!" aj was so happy to see her that he actually lifted her up and spun her a round one turn before placing her little frame back down.
he couldn't wait to catch up with her, show her around miami, and know exactly what's going on in phoenix. seeing krystal's face was probably the biggest relief. she reminded him of home and the air around her was extremely comforting to him. not that he was a different person at all when he was at home, but he felt like he could let loose even more now that she was here. "what brings you to miami?" he asked her, holding both of her hands in between the two. normally, he wasn't this affectionate with girls in public, but they were so used to each other that it didn't matter to him. hugs and casual hand holdings were commonplace. it was just natural to him.

keep the fire alive and stay young at heart [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, width: 425px; height: 325px; background-image:url(http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_liediyjHg21qcdtsho1_400.jpg), border: solid #C2CBC8 5px;] Having not seen her best friend in what felt like forever – though it was a considerably less time – Krystal didn’t mind being suffocated by the hug that lifted her off her feet. Her arms were wrapped tightly around his neck and her lips stretched wide in a smile. So this wasn’t how she’d planned it but it was just as good as far as she was concerned. Giggling, she clung a little tighter when he spun her. ”surprised?” She asked even though it was pretty obvious that he was indeed surprised by her sudden appearance. Still, the girl wanted to hear his answer. ”I just got in like twenty minutes ago.” She laughed, pushing some of her damp locks out of her face. From this point on, right up to the point where she would have to say goodbye to her best friend and leave him again, there would be a large smile pulling at her lips and she’d be in a constant state of euphoria. Of that she was ninety-eight percent sure, which was about as close as she allowed herself to get. One always had to leave room for Murphy’s Law to take effect.
"what brings you to miami?”
When the words escaped his lips, Krystal quirked her head to the side and gave her friend a look. Wasn’t it obvious why she was in Miami? ”Well he is yay tall,” she lifted her hand to indicate his height, ”has curly hair” she giggled as she tugged lightly on one of the curls, ”and he missed me.” She finished with a nonchalant shrug, grinning. ”So I figured I could take some time off to grace him with my presence.” At that, she couldn’t help but giggle. When it came down to it, Krystal was far from confident and cocky. In fact, the girl was a pile of nerves. Even when she was standing in line somewhere, she was nervous about everything that was going on around her. Thankfully AJ seemed to pull the fun loving girl from her and push that nervous lady down deep beneath the surface.
Krystal swung their hands a little. ”I was just going to grab a bite to eat.” She explained, wrinkling her nose as she spoke, as sign of the extent of her joy. ”And then I saw you and I figured I’d be polite and say hi.” She teased a little, eyes shifting from his deep brown ones which had the special ability to captivate and entrance her to the colorful display of sweet treats. ”What we getting?” She asked, inviting herself to his ice cream party of one. At least she thought it was a party of one seeing as no one seemed to be around on his behalf.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-image:url(http://i54.tinypic.com/2vafwqd.jpg), border: solid #ffffff 5px; width: 400px; height: 500px;] aj could have questioned why crystal even asked him if he was surprised. his reactions were more impulsive than ever and his eyes were wide. it was quite obvious that he was taken by her presence. aj couldn't be more excited to see a single person in his life. they had grown up together and shared so many memories. everything came rushing back to him when he saw her. "of course i am!" he was already making plans with her in his head. he couldn't wait to show her around campus, take her to parties, and have her meet all of his friends. andrew was sure that his best guy friends in miami would love to hang out with her whenever he wasn't around. and he might be partial, but knowing her, she would make friends all over the place. aj couldn't wipe the stupid grin he had on his face. the muscles in his cheeks were pained faintly, but the true happiness he got from seeing her overtook the fatigue.
andrew laughed as she described him as being her reason to come to miami. it may have been obvious to her, but to aj, he couldn't be sure. maybe she decided to take a trip to sea world with a pit stop here? or maybe she was thinking about transferring schools or something absurd like that. aj never pinned the first option to be him. ever. it would make him feel too cocky and overly confident. he should have just assumed in this situation though. both of them were extremely tight. aj loved her to pieces. whether it was in a romantic way or not could be debatable, but he basically had a girlfriend now, so that was out of the question. he laughed along with her, knowing that her confidence in her last statement was a joke. they were too alike. "i'm so glad you could fit me in you busy schedule." he put a faux posh tone in his voice. his smile grew wider, if that was even possible.
the momentum of their hands swinging back and forth put physical energy in aj's excitement. it was strange that he could hardly contain himself now. typically, he was laid back and was content to just sit around and do nothing, until he got tired of where he was and moved. andrew had never been so excited over one thing in his life. it was a strange feeling to him, but he was learning to love it. "well, thank god you managed to stumble upon me here because i have absolutely no idea what to get." he slowly dropped her hands and turned to the display of ice creams again. the colors danced around in the tubs and his mind ran through the options. "i was thinking rainbow sherbet, but cookies and creme also sounds like a good idea right now." he looked to her for an answer. there was no way he was going to make this decision alone. his indecisiveness was only amplified by his excitement in her presence.

keep the fire alive and stay young at heart [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, width: 425px; height: 325px; background-image:url(http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_liediyjHg21qcdtsho1_400.jpg), border: solid #C2CBC8 5px;] Her question about being surprised to see her was more rhetorical, an act of social norm, than a true question. But she was pleased that he answered it. Maybe that’s why people asked those kinds of questions. Even if it was painfully obvious, it was still nice to hear that he was not only surprised to see her but he was happy to as well. Krystal could see his brain turning behind those dark brown eyes of his and hers narrowed slightly as if he were scheming something, even though she was sure he was just trying to make sure she saw as much of Miami while she was here as he could. ”No listen here, you.” She said in a mock scolding tone. ”I don’t know what you’re got going in that head of yours but I can see your brain turning and let me tell you, don’t be getting any ideas. I have my own agenda.” She said, but even as the words were leaving her lips, her eyes were alight with laughter and she was clearly amused. Truth was, Krystal’s entire schedule was anything he decided they were doing. Still, she wanted to give him a bit of a hard time.
Wrapping her arms around him, Krystal gave him another squeeze before stepping back to look him over, ‘I can’t believe you’re here’ written all over her expression. ”Looks like Miami hasn’t been mistreating you at all.” She said brightly. As their attention changed from each other to the ice cream, she laughed and shook her head. ”Why don’t I get two scoops of the rainbow sherbet” her favorite ” and you can get yourself two scoops of the cookies and cream” a close second ”and we can share.” She suggested, gesturing to the respective cases. Some people might have looked to see if there was a new flavor here, something different to try but when it came to ice cream, Krystal’s choice rarely ever fluctuated. She loved her rainbow sherbet ice cream, even if it was considered a childish flavor.
”Hopefully your schedule isn’t completely booked for the next few weeks and you can squeeze me in some.” She said with a nervous laugh once they had their orders sorted out and were waiting for their ice cream to come over the top of the counter. Krystal was pretty sure she hadn’t missed a trip or something that would require him to leave her behind in their phone conversations but the thing about surprises was, it didn’t always work out. Krystal had to be willing to accept that there might be something she didn’t know about and she was. It wasn’t like she expected to monopolize AJ’s time while she was here but she certainly hoped she’d get her money’s worth because she wasn’t sure when the next time she’d get to see her friend was.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-image:url(http://i54.tinypic.com/2vafwqd.jpg), border: solid #ffffff 5px; width: 400px; height: 500px;] aj gave krystal the poorest excuse for a pout and puppy dog eyes. the boy had a baby face, but he never knew how to use it. even though krys said that she had her own agenda, aj was sure that it mostly included him. if he was the reason why she came to miami, he would most likely be the person she hung out with most of the time. unless, of course, she met someone and because best friends with them or whatever. but honestly, who would ditch their best friend on twenty years for someone who they met in a single summer? it was simply not worth it to aj. he was the most loyal guy in the world. aj knew the hard time was just a joke. he could see the laugh in the reflection of her eyes. those eyes that were so familiar to him. those eyes that made him feel like he was at home in the damn desert again. he loved phoenix, but aj knew he had to leave the nest at some point in his life. college was the perfect opportunity. there were plenty of schools closer to home that offered his major, but heading all the way to the east and going to miami seemed like the perfect way to just dive into a new life. not that he had changed much at all.
he adored the hug the krystal gave him, returning it with full force. he could get used to having her around. "thank god i bypassed the whole freshman fifteen." aj smiled, knowing fully well that he ate like crap all the time. he was a boy though, so his metabolism just seemed to run a lot faster than others. his diet regularly consisted of burgers and fries. or at least that was what his usual hangover cure was. and he was regularly hungover. he also ate a lot of ice cream. "you are a genius." he praised krystal for her fantastic idea. now, why didn't he think of that?
aj turned to the counter, making his order with the girl. he kind of felt bad that he was one of the most indecisive people in the world. that girl must have been waiting forever to have him make his order because there was no one left in the line and only three or four people sitting down eating. he told the girl exactly what his best friend had suggested: two scoops of cookies and creme and two scoops of rainbow sherbet. he paid for both of the treats and handed krystal her colorful confection. it didn't take long for aj to dig in because the spoon was already in his mouth before they even sat down. "trust me, even if i have to bring you to work with me everyday, we're hanging out all summer." he smiled, spoon still in his mouth, warping his speech. he had completely forgotten about fauna for the moment. she might actually consume the bulk of his time, but hopefully she would understand that his best friend was in town and he absolutely needed to be with her. the two were only dating, nothing super official, so it should be fine with fauna. aj was too happy that krystal was actually here. details like that meant nothing right now.
"so, what's been happening back at home?" he was curious. maybe krystal had spoken to his mom recently. aj worried for her. being at home all alone after her fiance died was probably not the idea situation. aj was too bust to sit down and video chat with her or call her up as often as he wanted. the guilt took over for a second, but then he was curious about her things. like, how was school for krystal at home? or maybe there were some new developments with his friends that he didn't know about? he was curious about anything and everything going on in phoenix while he was away at school.
