one of the best things about living in miami was the water. andrew had lived his entire life before he came here in complete landlock. pheonix, arizona wasn't exactly a hot spot for vacationers considering there was no beach or water to be seen always anywhere. the surrounding area was all desert. the ocean in miami though was absolutely exquisite and calmed every single one of aj's antsy nerves. he was a pretty chill guy, but being near the water and hearing the crashing of the waves made him even more laid-back, if at all possible.
he clutched the beer in his hand firmly. sure, he was still technically underage, but if he wanted to enjoy a few brews with his best friend on the pier, it was absolutely worth it. the condensation dripped down his hand and hit the wooden boards he was sitting on. he leaned back on the cooled behind him and looked out into the water. the sun had already went down. but there was just enough light to fully see everything around him. plus, some of the lights from the attractions around him kept the place illuminated. aj watched the water move as he took another sip of his ice cold booze. tonight, he wasn't going to drink to get drunk like he usually did. at least, that's not what he had set out to do. if he and jt happened to get shit faced in the middle of miami, so be it. that was what they did. he just hoped that he wouldn't end up passed out in the middle of nowhere come morning.

justin trainor, or jt as he liked to be called sat silently on the porch of his small down town apartment. he ran a hand through his medium length hair and blinked. looking out at the distance he stood up with a sigh, he was sick and tired of sitting around. feeling his phone vibrating in his pocket he slipped it out and unlocked it, it was a text from aj asking to meet up, shooting a quick response saying sure, he stood up and headed into the bathroom. hopping in the shower he washed his body and hair before stepping out. running his hands through his wet hair he headed back into the bedroom and stripped his towel off. putting on clothes he simply dressed in jeans and a plain white tshirt with white chucks. he slipped his black ray ban sneakers on his head and grabbed his phone, wallet and keys and headed out the door.
walking towards the docks he looked around, spotting a girl he thought was pretty he winked and blew a kiss then walked over towards the dock. he spotted aj. yoo bro! he walked towards him and slapped his back in a 'bro' way. grabbing the beer from him he wiped the lid and took a swig. spread the love man spread the love he laughed and handed it back to him. so what have you been up to? i feel like its been too long since we have seen each other he let out a sigh and sat down on the dock looking at the now darkening sky.

the serenity of looking out at the sea was quickly interrupted by a sharp pat on the back. normally, aj would have turned around and shot a questioning look to whoever had just done that, but the greeting and voice that followed it was typical of his best friend, justin trainor. the two met when aj had moved into miami and they've been the best of pals ever since. thy were almost inseparable in every sense and they wouldn't have it any other way. the slight schlock from the force of the slap made aj not initially respond to his friend. yes, he was expecting him because he had sent him a text earlier, but andrew had been sitting at the pier for so long that he had been lulled into the rhythm of the ocean and was in such a daze that he didn't realize how much time had gone by before his friend arrived.
"well, it took you long enough!" he joked, slightly scoffing as his friend took the beer he had in his hand. aj's eyes widened at him, dropping his jaw and raising his shoulders. "dude, what the hell?!" he laughed as jt took a gulp of his drink. he didn't really care about it. andrew was all for sharing, especially with justin. "you could have grabbed your own." he suggested, pulling out a brew from the cooler for his buddy. the ice that was in the water had melted completely in the heat of the night, but aj didn't mind. the icy water would be enough to keep them cool for as long as the two would be sitting out there. and even so, if the beer got warm, they wouldn't care. aj knew he would just drink it anyhow.
one sharp breath could be heard coming out of andrew. honestly, it had felt like they hadn't seen each other in ages. maybe andrew just wasn't used to being away from his friend for more than twenty-four hours. he felt like he would make time to see him daily. that might not be what typical bros did, but aj was different with all of his friends. he made sure to see each and every one of them as much as possible. "i honestly haven't been up to much." he shrugged. in another person's eyes, aj might seem like the busiest kid on the planet, but to him, his schedule felt like it hung completely open if he did the same thing for too long. "it's just been school and work for the most part. the restaurant is taking over my life." he groaned a little bit at the thought of the long hours he's had to pull lately. "but what's been keeping you from seeing me, man? you've got to visit me at work sometime!"

 the rythm of the waves hitting the dock had captivated jt's attention as well as it seemed to have aj's full eyes. jt chuckled and took more sips of the beer before his friend turned around and noticed him. he scoffed at him for being late and jt simply shrugged chugging the rest of his beer. he had to admit, he hadnt seen his friend in a while and he was under alot of stress. he was still trying to prove to his parents that his music would take off, but for some reason he didnt have the motivation to write anything new. letting out a sigh he put a hand on aj's shoulder and looked at him. im sorry ive been so distant bro. you know how hard things have been getting with this interview coming up. it was true. he had an interview with a music producer this coming week, friday night actually, and there were two possible ways this could play out. he could get the record deal and do awesome, or he could not get the record deal and drink himself into a coma.
music had always been jt's way of escaping reality. most times he found himself getting so lost in music that it would pass hours,even days and he wouldnt have moved except to get a beer and pee. he rarely ate,barely slept and never answered his phone. things were getting rough and jt was never like this. maybe he should havejust stayed in school and did what his parents wanted, become a stuffy lawyer. no. there was no way in hell jt would have enjoyed that. his thoughts had trapped his mind so that he didnt even realize aj was speaking to him again. i know i know, ill deffinetly come visit as soon as i can, free lunch though. im a bit broke he laughed at his own misfortune, there was no other way to look at it then that. laugh at your own faults. that was his motto.
after a few more moments of silence and the sound of the water hitting the docks jt decided he was done sitting in this dry heat. he popped open a beer and chugged half of it before setting it down on the cooler. he stripped his shirt off, leaving on his basketball shorts and looked at aj. i think its time to do something daring eh? without waiting for a response he took off running towards aj, sliding past him and ddove into the water canon ball style. after a few moments of intial shock from the cold water he emerged and let out a whooping sound. it feels awesome dude! |

aj was in complete awe of his friend. here he was, going to school and doing things in psychology, but this kid. jt was amazing. he had dropped everything to follow his true dream of being a musician. in the future, while aj was stuck listening to people talk about their lives for hours on end, justin would be performing in front of huge crowds in arenas and the like. at least that's what aj was rooting for. that way, he could look back on all the times they had and think to himself i knew that guy when… it was a thought that brought a smile to his face. "understandable!" aj proclaimed, knowing his bud was probably stressed out about what to do, what to say, and what to wear. first impressions could be tough. "you're gonna do great though." he had full belief in his words. jt was an awesome guy, anyone could see that. if this music producer didn't like him, then it was the producers loss.
aj felt the liquid flow quickly down his throat as he crushed the can he had just drank. rapidly reaching behind him to pull another one out, he listened to jt. cracking the can open, he spoke. "free lunch it is." it wasn't like aj was the greatest employee. plus, levi, another best friend of his, worked as a prep cook. of course he could snag some free food. "i'll just get levi to sneak you some." andrew downed most of the can that rested in his hand. the condensation had hardly a chance to form yet, but he was drinking quickly. at least he was with jt. he knew how to keep him level when it came to drinking. and being just the two of them, aj knew nothing besides the beer in his cooler was going to be handed over to him.
it wasn't surprising to aj when justin dove into the water. he had been waiting for his friend to do that, just so he could follow suit. gulping down the last of what was left in the metal can, he tossed it on the ground and pulled his shirt over his head. it was a good thing it wasn't all too cold at night in miami. at least it was nothing like the surprising desert chill of the nights in phoenix. aj was going to have to prepare himself for the water though. jean shorts weren't exactly the best for swimming, but after a few beers in and a slight buzz entering his brain, he hadn't a care in the world. he backed up before running into the ocean. coming up for air, he wiped his hair out of his eyes. "woo!" he released a shout. "i needed that. let's just hope the sharks don't get this close to the pier." he joked. aj knew from watching way too many shark weeks that the beasts were more active at night. he figured hey were safe though.
