Orla had woken up with the urge to do yoga. It wasn’t the prettiest day in Miami, but it definitely wasn’t the worst. It was somewhere in the middle, which wasn’t awful but it was good yoga weather. Orla contemplated doing yoga in the park, but decided on going to the beach for some yoga. The sound of the waves was relaxing and helped her concentrate better. She got herself ready, it was going to be a good morning, and headed out to he beach.
It was fairly early (well, around 10 AM) and the weather wasn’t the best so Orla had a fairly quiet beach to herself. It wasn’t that often that a beach in Miami was quiet, in fact, it rarely happened. There was always someone on the beach and today was no different, it was just quieter than normal. Orla found a nice area to settle herself down on. It was flat and relatively close to the water. It was a perfect place to practice yoga, without dying of heat stroke. She tossed her yoga mat and bag onto the sand and pulled her hair back into a ponytail. Yoga was hard work and she never did it with loose hair.
Orla unrolled her yoga mat and plopped her tiny body onto it. She crossed her legs, pretzel style, and sat with her back straight. Placing her left hand on her right knee she inhaled straightened her back and turned to her right. She felt the bones in her back crack into place. Then, she repeated the stretch on the opposite side. Orla felt good, it was always nice to feel her back crack that way before a good yoga stretch. Then she did a cat pose, arching her back, breathing deeply. It felt good doing these stretches on the beach. After completing these two stretches she stood up and began the sun salutation set of movements.
For the most part she kept her concentration, except for when she heard someone laughing in the water. Orla broke her concentration mid-stretch to see a girl swimming in the ocean. She had half a mind to tell the girl to get out because there didn’t appear to be any lifeguards on duty yet, but Orla was sure that she had friends or family somewhere around here. Orla returned her attention to the sun salutation she was working on. Moving slowly and deliberately she crouched low to the ground- just like she had seen on the Internet videos and stretched her body out. Orla definitely could not afford fancy yoga classes so all she did was watch videos on yoga and pilates so she could get into better shape.
As soon as she was done with the sun salutation she looked out at the water and noticed something was wrong. The girl who had been laughing and playing around in the water was missing. Normally, Orla would have thought that she had gotten out of the water and gone back to her friends- but this was different. The ocean was stained dark red, like…blood! Orla raced towards the ocean, which wasn’t very far, she would have gone in if she had not noticed the fins in the water. Sharks? Orla had never seen sharks, nor had she heard of them coming this close to shore. Immediately, she turned back around and ran towards her mat and bag.
Upon reaching her mat she dropped to her knees and began to search through her bag for her cell phone. She hit the “emergency call” option and, to her dismay and horror, saw that there was no cell phone reception on this part of the beach. “Shit!” She said putting her phone in the air, looking back at the water. There were more fins now, she could make them out against the dark waves. Tossing her phone in the bag she looked up and down the beach and began screaming. “HELP!” she screamed at the top of her lungs, hoping someone was in earshot. For all the Shark Week she had watched she had could not figure out what to do in this situation. “Somebody, please help!” Orla kept screaming as she looked up and down the beach for someone to help her.
